Damson Ghyll is situated at Latterhead, Loweswater in the Vale of Lorton which is in the more secluded northwest part of the Lake District National Park and is an ideal base for walking, cycling and touring. The towns of Cockermouth (Wordsworth’s birthplace) and Keswick are nearby. Latterhead is a small hamlet enclosed by Low Fell (see photo above) on one side and by the higher mountains of Whiteside and Grasmoor on the other. There are 3 lakes within easy reach of Latterhead – Loweswater itself, Crummock Water with its backdrop of Mellbreak and Grasmoor; and Buttermere surrounded by its own set of fells – Red Pike, High Stile, High Crag, Haystacks, Fleetwith Pike, Hindscarth and Robinson. The Vale of Lorton can be easily accessed over any of several beautiful passes – Whinlatter, Newlands or Honister from Borrowdale or simply off the A66 from Cockermouth. For cyclists, the Coast to Coast (C2C) route passes the front gate.
Damson Ghyll has a great view of Whiteside and Grasmoor on the other side of the valley to greet you on most mornings and, if you are lucky, one or two Red Squirrels in the trees. There is an en-suite shower room; TV equipped with Sky Freesat; tea and fresh coffee making facilities; and a mini fridge for your own use. If you can’t stand feeling unconnected to the wider world for a few days, a free Wifi connection for your laptop/phone/Kindle/etc is available. Rooms are on the ground floor with easy access from outside, where there is plenty of space for car parking. Guests are welcome to use the garden and even have a pre-breakfast soak in the beck that cascades down the edge of the garden if that's your inclination.
Breakfast is prepared using local produce wherever possible – choose from a selection of fresh seasonal and dried fruits, cereals and juice followed by a traditional full English breakfast. There is plenty of coffee/tea and toast from home-made wholemeal bread with home-made jams & marmalades (including a Gold award-winning one from the Dalemain World Marmalade Awards). If you have any specific dietary requirements, please let us know when booking. Packed lunches can be provided if arranged in advance. After breakfast, the day is yours to climb the adjacent Lowfell or nearby Haystacks, swim in Crummock or Loweswater or visit the nearby under-appreciated Solway coast. You can download a list of some of the local attractions and things to do here.
